The Finishing Touch -- 5 Ways To Spruce Up Your Driveway With Stamped Concrete

Pamela Gonzales

Are you looking for a way to dress up your front yard? Replacing boring, single color concrete with a decorative stamped concrete can be just what the doctor ordered. Here are 5 tips for creating the perfect design for any driveway.

Complement the Home. When deciding on a stamped concrete pattern, start by thinking about the architecture and style of the house. If the house has a formal architecture and design elements, you may want to make a straight driveway with a formal geometric pattern in stamped concrete. Conversely, a naturalistic and casual home may benefit from a gently curving driveway with a natural stone appearance.

Don't Skimp on Space. One way to ruin a good driveway is to make it too cramped to comfortably use. Both drivers and passengers will need room to comfortably get in and out of vehicles, and those wearing high heels will appreciate not having to deal with heels sinking into grass or dirt. In addition, some vehicles will be larger and wider than others. Be sure to leave at least 2 feet on each side for these normal activities.

Add Borders. Adding a decorative border to your driveway is an inexpensive and instant way to make it more beautiful or more fun. Stamped concrete can be used to make borders in just about any design you want. You could opt for a classic scroll design or a fun-loving flowered pattern, for example. If you don't have the funds to redo your entire driveway, consider replacing the borders for a quick makeover.

Repeat Elements. Look for ways to tie in the stamped concrete driveway with the house by using shapes and other features. This includes the color palette of the main house. Other home features you may be able to tie into the driveway include things like bricks, stone trim, or angles in the architecture.

Accessorize. A great accessory around the driveway can make the perfect capstone for your project. If the driveway is large and wide, you may want to add a set of gates or entry posts. If there's not as much room, you could complement the concrete design with a hedge or flower bed border. A circular or half-moon driveway works well with a focal point centerpiece such as a fountain or yard sculpture.

It may be best to consult with a contractor like Stephens & Smith Construction Inc experienced in using stamped concrete to determine the best ways to incorporate these ideas into the perfect driveway for your own space. The result is sure to please both you and your guests for years to come.
